Financial Support
Note: As of July 21 2020 all of the hardship funds have been claimed. We are looking into potentially finding more funding sources for this project and will let our members know when we are able to accept applications again.
Are you experiencing financial difficulty?
Here’s how your Students’ Union can help:
Hardship Funding
Staff and board members of the ECSU have seen that this has been an incredibly difficult year for a lot of students, and many of you are experiencing financial insecurity. The pandemic has affected almost every industry, many of you have experienced loss of income yourself and through your families, while others are essential workers having to work under increasingly stressful and uncertain conditions.
The ECSU is a member organization, meaning by enrolling in Emily Carr, you are a member of the students’ union, and our sole purpose on campus is to support and serve students. We have been able to put aside a small amount of money to allocate for students experiencing financial hardship. This can be anything from needing an extra boost on your rent, having to pay for new art supplies, or suddenly having to pay for a bill that you weren’t expecting.
Members may request financial support of any amount up to a total amount of $300.00 based on need. These funds will be available until they have been completely distributed. ECSU staff will coordinate with members to distribute hardship funds and aim to make the process as simple and non-intrusive as possible.
How to apply
In order to apply for this funding all you have to do is email info@ecsu.ca stating the amount you are requesting and an overview of the need. If you would rather have a phone or video call instead of writing an email with these details, we would be happy to accommodate this as well, just email us to schedule a time.
Logistics for Financial Transfer
One of the ECSU staff, Iris Li, our Director of Finance and Operations, will coordinate with members to confirm the most appropriate email address to send an e-transter to.
Unfortunately, due to the logistics of transferring funds, this funding can only be available to students who can deposit the funds to a Canadian bank account.
Note: Due to limited funds, all students who apply may not receive the funding in the event that we receive more requests than available funds. However, once we disperse all the funds we will be in contact with other opportunities and ways to access the funds you need.
Quest Grocery Card
Quest’s Food Recovery and Redistribution model is an innovative idea in which Quest recovers quality surplus food and necessities from suppliers at all levels of the supply chain and redistributes these goods to referred clients from not-for-profit organizations. Quest offers a dignified shopping experience and access to healthy and affordable grocery items, household items and personal care products.
We are happy to say that the Emily Carr Students’ Union can refer students in need of this service to receive a card and access these groceries. We ask that students who are in serious financial need apply, and if you generally have no issues finding money for groceries then this might not be the service for you.
If you wish to get referred for Quest food exchange, or just want more information about the program, please send us an email at info@ecsu.ca
Note: Please keep in mind that Quest grocery stores are only in Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, and North Vancouver.
